Happy Birthday America and a big thank you to all of our residents that protect our freedom and the families that support them.
July is also Blueberry Month, but here in the interior August is our prime season and ends in September. Berry picking is a fun activity to do with the family. Check out www.alaska.org/advice/berry-picking for a list of places to go.
As many of you recall we had a ground breaking ceremony for the community center in May. The Community Center has been named Mile Post 26 to honor Eielson’s original name, Mile 26, given to it during World War II, due to its distance from Ladd Army Air Field in Fairbanks AK. It shut down after the war and reopened in 1946 and later renamed Eielson AFB for Ben Eielson, who died in an airplane crash in 1929 attempting a rescue of an icebound ship in the Bering Sea. We anticipate completion in June 2018.
Happy 4th of July
Nothing celebrates America like the 4th of July, but using fireworks, firecrackers, or other pyrotechnics is prohibited on Eielson AFB. Only the installation commander can approve the use of fireworks on the base. If you want to celebrate the 4th of July at Eielson, you can attend the 4th of July Bash at Birch Lake. The event is July 4 from noon to 5 p.m. and includes free food, lots of beach fun and free watercraft and equipment rentals. The event will be located at Outdoor Recreation at Birch Lake. This free event is open to the Eielson AFB community.

Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska (June 5, 2017) – Corvias Foundation, a private, charitable foundation and the charitable arm of Corvias, has been committed to supporting military families in the pursuit of higher education since 2006. This year, its 11th, Corvias Foundation has awarded a college scholarship of up to $50,000 to an outstanding student from Eielson Air Force Base, as part of the 12th class of scholarship recipients.
Scholarship recipient, Jeyani James from Ben Eielson Junior/Senior High School, has participated in track, volleyball, and basketball. Jeyani plans to study business at the University of Oregon.
The scholarships provide reliable, recurring financial assistance over each student’s four years of study, as well as a support network that is committed to his or her academic and professional growth. Students receive scholarships to pursue a secondary education at colleges and universities around the country.
“This scholarship will allow me to better focus on my aspirations to become successful in my career choice of business as opposed to focusing on financial stressors that many college students deal with today,” said James. “I am so grateful to the Corvias Foundation for selecting me as a recipient of this scholarship and do not take this opportunity lightly. I will be sure to capitalize on it by continuing to be diligent in my studies and hopefully providing similar opportunities for others in my future.”
Corvias Foundation awarded the scholarships based on merit and need. Each student was required to respond to four questions that highlighted different aspects of their lives as students and as members of an active-duty military family. This fall, each student will be attending the four-year institution of his or her choice to pursue their academic careers.
“Each year, we are awed by the drive and determination in these military family members to reach high in their goals and dreams, and all the while, giving back to their communities,” said John Picerne, Foundation Founder, “Being able to support our scholars financially and through ongoing mentoring and other opportunities is an honor we cannot quantify.”
Since 2006, Corvias Foundation has awarded more than $7 million through 364 scholarships to military spouses and children at 13 different Army and Air Force installations. Among this year’s scholarship recipients are aspiring engineers, philanthropists, nurses, physical therapists, and teachers.
The Foundation awarded 12 scholarships up to $50,000 to children of active-duty service members stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Polk in Louisiana, and Fort Sill in Oklahoma.
